Welcome to History
Academic Overview:
History is the interpretation of the past – the good, the bad, the glorious and the ugly – so that we can better understand our present. History helps us to understand who we are! History connects us, as individuals and communities, to our heritage, and helps us to begin to answer questions such as ‘where did we come from? or ‘what shapes our identity?’ Endeavouring to answer these questions will foster great pride, but it should also encourage us to reflect on our complex and often challenging pasts.
History equips us to deal with contemporary challenges. Thinking like a historian teaches us a healthy scepticism which promotes media literacy, empowering us to navigate the online world, essential in an age of ‘fake news’, misinformation and competing truths.
History inspires us! Historical movements and figures have often served as inspiration of activism, innovation and resilience. We should be inspired by those who stood up against justice, and seek to emulate achievements and be empowered to know that we have the ability to leave the world a better place than we found it!
"History is not the past, it’s what’s left in the sieve when the centuries have run through it.”
Dame Hilary Mantel
To ensure that students are aware of the links between the past and the present, we aim to deliver a curriculum which is rich and inclusive, to help students discover how British history links and interconnects with wider European and international history, which offers plenty of opportunities for cultural enrichment.
We aim for a knowledge rich curriculum by focussing on disciplinary knowledge, which allows students to make progress in dealing with substantive concepts such as power, religion, trade, and migration, which enables them to build their knowledge and skills over time. We encourage the achievement of this goal through the pursuit of excellence via challenging yet supportive academic rigour. We aim to ensure that our schemes of learning are based on recent historical scholarship and wider historical research, so that students are keenly aware of the links between the past and present. Historical literacy is at the heart of our subject.
